Do you know where to start looking?
Here are some places where you’ll find job vacancies.
Our online vacancy service covers job and training opportunities in Nottinghamshire and includes seasonal and temporary vacancies. You can apply for some of the jobs online or phone your local Connexions Centre. See also the pages Finding Your Own Employer and Local Recruitment Information which has lots of info on where to look for vacancies in your area.
Connexions centres
Your nearest Connexions centre will be able to tell you the latest vacancies available for young people.
Notice boards in school or college
Some schools and colleges will display ‘summer starts’ vacancy cards. These are usually displayed November to June and give details of job vacancies that have a start date of July 2009 or later. If your school or college doesn't display these ‘summer starts’, you can find them on Vacancies Online.
Jobcentre Plus
Jobcentre Plus offices will have many jobs on file, some of which may be suitable for you.
Recruitment agencies
A recruitment agency will look at your skills and experience and then match you to a suitable job. Use Vacancies Online or Yellow Pages to find your nearest offices.
Newspapers and magazines
Local newspapers like the Nottingham Evening Post, Worksop Guardian or Mansfield Chad are a good source of job vacancies. National newspapers such as The Guardian, Independent and Telegraph also carry some trainee roles. Look out for specialist magazines too that cover the area you’re interested in. You may find some of these in your college or local library.
On the computer
Many organisations use the internet to advertise their latest vacancies. Most companies also have their own website which often has an employment or jobs page - try typing their name into a search engine like Google.
Books
You may find ‘Summer Jobs in Britain’ or ‘Abroad’ and the ‘Job Book’ in your local library. These can provide useful names and addresses of organisations.
Look around you
Next time you’re in a shop look on the walls around you. Many employers advertise positions within the shop itself. Sometimes you can pick up an application form straight away!
Ask around
Family and friends are often a good source of knowledge. They might have a vacancy going at their workplace that would suit you. Don’t be shy – let them know you’re looking!
