World of Work
Do you wonder what work will be like as you get older? Maybe you're not sure what the world of work is like at the moment... This section will help you plan your career by looking at future trends and the different ways in which we work.
Work facts for the 21st century
It’s predicted that there will be over 1.3 million new jobs created between 2004 and 2014*. Add this to the 12 million people expected to retire and you can work out that there’ll be lots of jobs for young people over the next few years!
However, the type of work available is changing all the time. There are now more jobs for people working in these occupations:
- Managerial
- Technical
- Professional
- Personal service
- Sales and customer service
and fewer jobs for people who:
- operate machinery or transport
- do unskilled work
- do admin or clerical work
But there will still be jobs in these areas. It’s just that there’ll be more non-manual jobs (or white collar jobs) than manual jobs (or blue collar jobs). Twenty years ago this was the opposite.
What does this mean to you?
It means that you're more likely to get a job if you have some good qualifications. The more qualifications you have, the more jobs you will be able to apply for. Whilst work experience is important, employers really want people who have at least five good GCSEs including English and maths.
If the job you're applying for means you'll be spending some time at college then check out their requirements - some colleges may ask you for certain qualifications to get on that course.
